How Do Touch Screen Phones Work?

Have you ever wondered how touch screen phones work? If you do, you came to the right place!

Before I start, we must know the three types of technology in touch screen: resistive, capacitive and infared.

Examples of touch screen phones using resistive technology are: Samsung Messager Touch, Samsung Instinct, HTC Touch Diamond and LG Dare. At the back of the screen of a touch screen resistive technology using phone, there are many small dot seperating multiple layers of material that transmits currents. When one touches the flexible layer, it pushes it into the lower layer, it then calculates the location one has touch. Its screen is made of a flexible material placed over a layer of glass. One may touch it with bare hands, when wearing gloves or use a stylus. Outdoor visibility is poor which is bad when it is a sunny day and when one is wearing sunglasses. It does not have multi-touch possibilities and the screen will wear over time and will need replacing.

Now for capacitive technology phones: Huawei Ascend, Sanyo Zio, Apple's Iphone, HTC Hero, DROID Eris, Plam Pre and Blackberry Storm. Currents are broadcast from the corners of the screen, When one touches the screen, the current are changed and location will be Calculated.
The screen for Capacitive phone is made of glass. One can only use bare hands only, outdoor visibility is clear for those wearing sunglasses. Multi-touch possibilities and the screen will only shatter during a major impact.

Finally, we have infared technology phones. There are two types: Heat-sensitive and Optical. Examples are: Samsung U600(heat) and Neonode N2(optical).
Heat types must be touched with warm objects to register point of impact. Optical uses sensors that creates a grid of invisible beams just above the screen, area of impact is calculated on the point where the X-Y axis is interrupted. Both types uses glass screen that shatter during a major impact only. One can only use warm hands when using heat-sensitive phone and can use bare hands, gloves or a stylus to use optical phones. Good outdoor visibility with strong ambient light impacts productivity and precision. Multi-touch possibilities.

After read this, hope you guys will understand how touch phones work. Hope you all a fun time choosing a new touch phone. BYE!!
